Our boys are growing up and that means that their playroom was in serious need of an update. Check out how we gave their old babyish playroom a complete makeover and turned it into a boys’ industrial farmhouse playroom.
When I say ORGANIZED, you say PLAYROOM!
Me: ORGANIZED!! You: PLAYROOM!!
Me: ORGANIZED!! You: PLAYROOM!!
When I say PLAYROOM, you say MAKEOVER!
Me: PLAYROOM!! You: MAKEOVER!!
Me: PLAYROOM!! You: MAKEOVER!!
WOOOOH! I had to kick it back to my old high school cheerleading days there for a second! But that’s only because I am SO EXCITED to share with you the grand reveal of our boys’ industrial farmhouse playroom!
Let’s check it out! (Said in my peppy cheerleader voice!)
So our playroom really isn’t a room, but more of a nook located off of our family room. This setup works out beautifully! The boys can have their own little space-yet its easy for us adults to keep an eye on them.
The first thing we did was totally clear out the room. We got rid of the old furniture and decor and gave the toys a ruthless purge! The room and trim also got a fresh coat of paint.
If you missed it, you can check out the other posts to our playroom makeover series here.

Small Toy Storage
To organize the boys’ eight million little toys, this Kallax shelving unit from Ikea was the perfect solution. All of the little toys were organized by category and placed in a designated storage bin. I love these gray and white striped bins from Target. Each storage bin got a simple chalkboard label, and I just tied them on with some jute rope from my craft stash.
Is it weird that my shirt matches the toy bins?! Maybe I like gray and stripes a little too much?
To mix it up a bit and to add some industrial touches, I added in these metal locker storage bins. I found these on Wal-Mart.com. They have a dark gray finish and a cute space to add a label. I typed these labels in Canva using an old typewriter font.
Stuffed Animal Solutions
Here I used an old laundry basket I had around the house to hold the boys’ stuffed animal collection. This used to have a liner in it, but I ripped it out, cuz I’m a rebel like that. 🙂 I like the farmhouse-ish look and its tall enough to hold all of their plushies.
Their stuffed animal collection is a bit too much for my liking. I’d like to reduce this to about half of what’s pictured here, but the boys solemnly swear that these are the ones they just can’t live without.
I guess I’ll have to pick my battles here. At least there’s a designated spot for them and my rule is that they can’t have any more without getting rid of some first.
Playroom Table, Chairs, Curtains & Rug
Here’s a full view of the room. This little alcove has a sliding door that leads right out to our backyard. The boys love to run out back and jump on their trampoline. There’s no doubt that the boys will be tracking in dirt and mud, so I was sure to get a rug that was inexpensive and kid-friendly.
The rug is in gray and blues in a faded vintage type pattern. The pattern help will help to hide any dirt or stains. It’s a pretty thin rug and it’s still taking its sweet time to lay flat-hence the fold lines you see. But I think “thin-ness” of the rug will help it to be easy to clean or even be able to be taken outside and hosed off.
You’ll see in the background that I took down the old playroom curtain valence and vertical blinds. I replaced it with a simple set of white grommet curtains from Target. I figured if they got dirty, I could just throw them in the wash with a little bit of bleach.
This set of farmhouse bistro chairs were ordered from Overstock. They are full sized but super affordable for a playroom. I’ve linked all of the sources below. No need to worry about paint or anything getting spilled on these-just wipe and go!
We’ve had this playroom table since the kids were toddlers. It’s from Pottery Barn Kids and I’ve loved it! I wrote in my last post about how we almost got rid of this table because I thought the boys had outgrown it. I’ve learned that Pottery Barn carries taller Grow-With-Me table legs, so we were able to order taller legs for the table. You can read all about it in my previous post {Here}.
Corral Art Supplies
My boys love arts and crafts! Their writing utensils got some order here with a cute galvanized bucket from Hobby Lobby. I keep this right in the middle of their little table so they can grab them whenever creativity strikes.
Sometimes they like to do their homework down in the playroom. It’s nice to have everything easily accessible when it comes time to getting homework done. There’s no excuse that they can’t find a pencil or a certain color crayon, right?!
They have a chalkboard easel in the room and they’ve actually had it for several years now. They still use it all the time. You can see it hiding out there in the background. They like to write silly messages to each other and now that Tommy is learning how to write in cursive, it’s a good practice space for him.
I had those old mini buckets around the house and decided to use them to corral all of their chalk-one for small pieces of chalk and another bucket for the large chunky pieces.
Extra Playroom Storage and Seating
Now onto the other side of the room…this wall got a wall unit of sorts. It’s really just two Billy bookcases from Ikea and a toy box that I found from Amazon.
I squished them all together to create this wall unit and I have to say that I LOVE it! I love all of the storage space it offers, but I really love how the little toy box acts like a little seating area when not in use.
The bookcases are working out great as a way to store and organize all of the boys’ board games and puzzles. I also used plastic storage containers and drawers to hold all of their Lego collections and art supplies. The bottom shelves are housing the big trucks and larger toys that didn’t fit into the storage bins.
The toy box is where the boys keep all of their superhero costumes, nerf guns, swords, and other weapons. If there ever was a zombie apocalypse, this is where I’m headed first!
Art Display
If you read my previous posts, you might remember that I was on the hunt for the perfect corkboard to display the boys’ artwork. I decided on this board and am really happy with how it fits in with the space. Not to mention, it was only $10! I scored this little find in the clearance section of Marshall’s.
Don’t you love their little art projects? That cute groundhog gets me every time! ❤️
The wooden arrow hanging above the corkboard is also from Hobby Lobby. I’m pretty sure that I used their 40% off coupon and ended up buying it for under $5-another frugal win!
Fun & Whimsy Pillows
Now, what’s a playroom without a little whimsy? It’s no secret that I’ve got an addiction to throw pillows, but these are so just too fun!
I love the mix of pattern and textures, but that doggy pillow with the superhero mask is just darling. Believe it or not, he was another clearance find from Target.
And just for the record, I wonder how many more times I can use the phrase, “I love” in this post…lol.
Board Games and Puzzle Organization
These Billy bookcases from Ikea are the real workhorses in the room. I am such a visual person so I love how these shelves allow us to see everything while keeping everything in reach and organized all at the same time.
I used the top two shelves to hold the game boards and puzzles. The middle section of each shelf is holding some of the smaller toys like Legos, art supplies, and K’Nex sets. The lower shelves are holding some of the taller toys.
We have a budding scientist in the family. You can spy Nate’s science kit and DIY volcano up there on the very top of the bookshelf. Whenever he’s in the mood to be scientific, we just help him get down all his supplies.
**Safety Check** We have talked and my boys know not to ever climb these shelves. Ian also has these bolted these into the studs for extra safety and peace of mind.
These two plastic mesh baskets were things that I already had but worked out great to hold coloring books and art stencils.
Another activity that my boys really enjoy is building things. I’m all about them using their brains to build and create, but I’ve struggled with how to organize all of those darn little pieces.
I’m also a little bit OCD and freak out a tiny bit inside when I think about pieces going missing or sets of items getting lost or mixed up with other toys. I mean how can you build a specific Lego set if parts and pieces are missing?!! I just can’t.
Here I used plastic bins from The Dollar Tree to organize their Lego and building sets. Each bin got a label so they know exactly where to find each project.
Most Lego and K’Nex sets come in a large box. I streamlined this by putting each set into its own plastic storage bin, slapped a chalkboard label on it, and called it done!
Now my OCD brain can sleep at night.
I will be writing a more specific post on how we organized all of the toys in the room, so be on the lookout for that.

Thank you for checking out our playroom reveal. I’m so thrilled with how it turned out but even more happy about all of the major organization that is now happening in this room. No more ridiculous playroom messes (or at least ones that can’t be cleaned up easily!)
I also love the new furniture and decor items in the room. I think the boys approve and they are also loving their more mature industrial farmhouse playroom.

Those before and after pictures are amazing!! Even though you choose larger pieces of furniture it appears so much cleaner to the eye. Great job! Now I want to figure out a spot in my house for those awesome metal PLAY letters.

I’m obsessed with storage bins in my home, it drives my hubby crazy! That whole space looks excellent! We’re shopping for a toy chest, do you still like that one?
Erica, thank you! I know, same! Love me some storage bins!! The toy chest is working out great! It opens and closes so smoothly, easy to put together, and great quality for the price.

What a GORGEOUS playroom!! I especially love the giant “PLAY” on the wall and the beautiful organization. Will your kids keep it that way? Because mine would have that room demolished before I could blink. And they are teens!
Thank you for your sweet comment, Jessica! My boys can certainly wreck a room and quick!! Ha! I’m hoping with the new organization and labels, it will at least be easier to clean up! Fingers crossed!
