Hello everyone! Not too long ago, I shared about how we decided to makeover our family room and playroom area. I just wanted to hop on here today and share the progress we’ve made so far in the room. Right now the room looks pretty plain, but so much work had to happen to get it this way. Seriously!
For those of you who are just joining me here with this room update, you can click here to check out the first post and inspiration for the family room makeover.
I’m really excited with how this room is turning out. As I’ve mentioned before, this room was an area that had been neglected for quite some time. The paint and decor were dated and all of the furniture had seen better days. I didn’t feel the space reflected my current style and because of that, I just ended up avoiding the space altogether. (Insert sad face)
Clearing Out the Room
Here’s a little before and a progress pic…

Before

Progress
Whenever I do a complete overhaul of a room, I always declutter as much as possible. I’m pretty ruthless when it comes to this step! For this space, I got rid of anything and everything that didn’t fit in with the new design for this room.
For items that were in good shape but were just no longer my style, they were either sold or donated. Broken items were bagged up and thrown away. For me, it always feels so freeing to purge and make room for new decor and energy in the space!
For the items that I sold, I used my local online yard sale sites and Facebook sales groups. This is really easy to do but it can be time-consuming. I do make a little pact with myself, that whatever money I make from selling items, I can then use that extra cash to buy new items for the room. It’s a win-win and it motivates me to get rid of anything that I don’t absolutely love or doesn’t serve a purpose.
Painting the Walls
Once all of the old decor and clutter was cleared out, it was time for some fresh new paint! I was totally over the baby blue paint and wanted to bring in a warm gray to neutralize the room.
To get started, I pushed all of the existing furniture into the center of the room, laid down drop cloths, and got rollin’. I chose Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams. It’s a light gray with some beige undertones. Repose Gray is on the warmer side but not beige enough to be a “greige”, if that makes sense.
I love how Kylie from Kylie M. Interiors describes Repose Gray. Read her description here.

So far I have zero paint regrets with this color! It’s light, neutral, and I think it’s going to coordinate well with my existing furniture. LOVING IT!
While I was painting the walls, I decided to go all in and paint the trim too. The trim color is Alabaster by Sherwin Williams. Alabaster is a warmer white but I like it because it’s not too yellow.
I feel like it’s always such a huge job to paint both the trim and walls in a room. But the results are SO worth it. The room looks and feels totally different! I think it feels fresh, clean, and updated. Yah! I’ve learned to never underestimate the power of paint, ya’ll!
Arranging Furniture
I decided to keep most of the furniture that I already had in this space. I wanted to keep my budget small and try to repurpose the couch, chairs, bookshelves, and tv cabinet. This room is sort of long and narrow, so I moved the tv cabinet to the far back wall and stuck it in between the bookshelves. This created a large “entertainment center” and now is the focal point of the room.
You can see that I added new storage baskets to the tv cabinet. These are from Target and I’ve linked them below. These will be used to organize all of our media stuff, like DVDs, Xbox games, remote controls, etc.
Our bookshelves hold all of our family’s books and pictures. I’ll be working on restyling our bookshelves and working on some more organization.
The couch stayed in the same place, and then I swung one of the chairs around to create a cozy seating area. Our sofa and chairs were pretty yucky, but I took on the task of restoring them. They certainly aren’t perfect but they look SO MUCH BETTER!
You can read about how I fixed them up here. If you have an old ugly sofa but aren’t ready to invest in new furniture, you’ll definitely want to check out that post!
One item that I didn’t even consider fixing up was our faux leather ottoman. This was a gift from my mother-in-law, so I feel bad that the boys and our pets were so hard on it. The “leather” was ripped and it looked like Baby Cat used it as her scratching post. Oh, poor ottoman! RIP. ?
I replaced it with this small coffee table. I thought this one looked kinda farmhouse-ish and love how it has the lower shelf for extra storage. It fits much better in this space, as the ottoman was square, which took up a lot of the floor space. I’ve linked the source below.
Our end table was still in decent shape, so I decided to keep it in the room. The two lamps were repurposed from the upstairs living room and were given a new life down in the family room. I’m all about shopping my own house!
Layering New Rugs
You’ve seen it all over Pinterest and in all the interior catalogs-the layered rug look. How do you feel about it? I personally love the layered look as I feel it adds texture and richness to a space. But I never thought that I’d actually try it in my own home…until now. ?
The smaller rug I picked up at our local Ollie’s. If you’ve never heard of Ollie’s, it’s a discount store where they sell overstock items at really cheap prices. We popped in there one day and I was surprised at all of the interior rugs that they had for sale. I fell in love with the pattern and colors of this rug but they only had it in the 5×7 size. I bought it anyway knowing that I had a bigger sisal rug at home that I could try layering it with.
Baby Cat spent a lot of time testing out the new rug. She probably thinks that we bought it just for her. Silly kitty!
The sisal rug was purchased a few years ago online. I’ve linked the sources below. It’s held up well and is going to get new use down in the family room.
Ready for Decor Items
So this is how the looks room right now. I realize that it looks really plain but that just means that it’s ready for the fun stuff-accessories! This week I plan on hanging the curtains, getting wall decor up, and fluffing the couch with pillows and throws. I’m so excited! Adding in the accessories and final touches of the room are always my favorite part!!!
