It’s time to update our boys’ playroom! Here you’ll find the before photos as well as a design board for inspiration to create a rustic industrial farmhouse playroom.

Hey Gang! Some of you might remember that last week I shared that we’re revamping our basement family room. If not, if you check it out here. I’m happy to report that the room is well underway and I’m loving the progress so far! I also posted an update here.
Like I mentioned before, the basement family room is shaped like an L, with the playroom being attached over to the right of the space. Both the family and the playroom are open to each other, which basically means that if I’m updating the family room, it only makes sense to makeover the boys’ playroom too. It’s like a two-for-one kind of a space.
Making over the boys’ playroom is totally warranted! Over the years their toy collection has grown immensely and they have outgrown many of the preschool-aged toys and games. (Time please slow down!)
I’m so thankful that we have a designated space in our house for all of the boys’ toys. We don’t store any toys in their bedroom, and besides a small bucket kept in the living room, all of the toys are kept down in the playroom.
(This totally saves my sanity! Toy clutter could be one of the fastest ways to make my blood pressure rise! You too?!)
Before Photos
Their current playroom has worked well for them over the years. It was bright, colorful, and had enough open storage where they could easily grab their toys. They’ve spent many hours down in the room just playing away. It’s also worked out nicely for playdates and times for when alllll the cousins came to visit.
Now that my boys are 6 and 8, you can see just how babyish the room would be for them. They really need more of a “cool kid” hangout space that will grow with them.
Maybe you’re feeling like me and thinking the room looks a bit busy and overwhelming. This room defenitely needs a good purge and some simplification!
Boys Industrial Farmhouse Playroom Inspiration
To help me get all of my ideas together for the room, I whipped up this design board. I’ve linked all of the sources below.

New Paint
The playroom is in need of a fresh coat of paint. The baby blue color was bright and cute for when they were toddlers, but now that they are in elementary school, I’d like to switch it out with a soothing warm gray.
Since the family room is painted in Sherwin Williams Repose Gray, I’ll continue with the same color to keep the flow of two rooms feeling cohesive.
Smart Furniture Solutions
The current furniture is pretty old and beat up-not to mention super cheap. The white shelves were just some cheapo laminate shelves we bought to have open shelving so the boys could easily grab their toys. While I still don’t plan on spending a ton on furniture, a trip to Ikea is certainly in order!
I plan on using two of the Billy bookcases to house the boys’ games, puzzles, craft supplies, and large toys. The white toybox is going to go between the two bookcases and act as both a storage unit and a bench for extra seating. This Kallax Cube system will be placed on the opposite side of the room to hold organizational storage bins and smaller toys.
This little playroom table is a piece that we already had and was ordered from Pottery Barn Kids several years ago. The boys have loved it and I loved that it was both cute and well built.
Since the boys have grown so much, I almost got rid of this table and was going to sell it on a local yard sale group-just because the legs were too low for the boys to use comfortably anymore. I planned on finding another smaller, but taller replacement.
Then randomly sent a text to my mom with a picture of the table saying something like…”I love this table, I’m so sad that I’m getting rid of it. It’s just too small for the boys now.”
And do you know what my mom’s reply was? Genius! Genius, I tell you!! She sent a response that suggested we should try to replace the legs or see if Pottery Barn carries taller replacement legs.
And OMGEE, that is exactly what Pottery Barn Kids does! Since it had been several years since we’ve purchased the table, I had to figure out exactly what we have and it’s the Carolina Grow-With-You Small Table. After doing a little online search, this table comes with a shorter set of legs that measure 15″ high but can be switched out with 24″ legs. You can purchase the table with both sets of legs as a set. How smart is that?!
Since I already had the table and lower set of legs, all had to do was order the taller size legs individually. Here is the link for just the table legs. They were only a whopping $29! Which I think is a great deal for Pottery Barn, and much cheaper than buying a whole new table!
Yah! The playroom table gets to stay!
The boys already have this chalkboard easel and I’m cool with keeping it in the room. They use it all the time to write silly messages or practice their drawing skills. Since Tommy is now in 3rd grade, he likes to show off to Nate how he can write in cursive. He has his mama’s teacher’s heart! ?
I like the wood tones and the “fun factor” that it brings to the space. This specific easel is from Ikea.
New farmhouse Style Chairs
I love these chairs! They are a galvanized metal and are super affordable from Overstock.com. These will add a touch of that industrial farmhouse look that I’m wanting, plus these are full sized and will help the space looks a bit more mature. These are also super kid friendly-no need to worry about paint or Play-Doh being spilled on these.
Playroom Storage Containers
The playroom is going to need a lot of storage containers to hold all of the boys’ small toys. Think action figures, dinosaurs, cars, play animals, etc. I plan of keeping it looking streamline with just using two or three different types of storage containers.
I’m leaning towards these canvas cube storages boxes from Target. I’m a sucker for anything with stripes and I think these look playful without being too babyish.
The other storage container that I want to add in are these metal locker storage baskets. I found these on Wal-Mart’s website. I like how they have a space to add a label and these will also add another touch of that rustic industrial farmhouse look.
Decorative Accessories
Once all of the furniture and organization is under control, the playroom is going to need some decorative accessories.
I like this rug from Overstock. It has gray and blue tones in a faded pattern. This will help hide dirt and stains. It’s also thin and durable, so if an accident should happen, this looks easy to clean.
These two pillows are covers from Amazon. I like the mix of grays and patterns. These are also kid-friendly as the covers can be taken off and washed as needed.
How adorable is this doggy plush? He’s not exactly farmhouse-ish, but man, he’s cute! I found this online at Target and thought he’d look great sitting with all the pillows on top of the storage bench.
To add some more of that rustic industrial feel, these galvanized metal letters were found at Hobby Lobby. I’d like to have these above the Kallax Cub storage unit and spell out the word, “PLAY.”
To finish off the space, I’ll be on the hunt for some additional wall decor. The boys will need a space to hang their art work. I haven’t found exactly what I’m looking for yet, but I’ll share it with all of you when I do!
